CHAMPIONS
For the HIBISCUS COAST
SOS - Save Our Stadium - and we have!
Last year the Mayor & CCO Auckland Unlimited planned to demolish North Harbour Stadium & sell off the land. It took monumental effort from us and a small group of committed people, with the support of Erica Stanford MP, to save the stadium - plus overwhelming support from the community. We won a decisive victory.
Our efforts are now focused on getting more sports, events & entertainment back.
“We are totally committed to safeguarding this magnificent community asset - making it a sporting and cultural centrepiece for 500,000 people north of the bridge.”
PREVENTING PRIVATISATION FOR THE benefit of the FEW and the expense of the many
Early in 2025 an attempt was made to privatise the management of Auckland Council’s 39 Pools & Leisure Centres. There are 3 centres in Albany ward - at Stanmore Bay, Browns Bay and Albany - all well-run & valued by local communities (the council-run sites have much higher customer satisfaction scores than outsourced counterparts).
“We value our Surf Lifesaving Clubs & Leisure Centres & will do all we can to protect & advance their interests.”
Saving Orewa Beach Reserve open space.
We support the call of Orewa Reserve Community Association and locals to retain the current reserve and all its facilities by quickly and inexpensively constructing a rock revetment wall along this part of the beach (retaining Norfolk pines, basketball and volleyball courts, playground and existing parking).
“The community have made their views clear - it’s time for a new
local board to act on their behalf.”
Protecting and restoring Gulf Harbour Golf Course
We’ve worked closely with the community & great people from Keep Whangaparaoa Green Spaces to ensure the golf course covenant is upheld by Council & there’s a commitment to a solution that restores the course. Our local community is fighting back, an army of volunteers maintaining the course, the jewel in the crown of the open space network in this area.
“We’re totally committed to ensuring this course is protected & restored for the benefit of the community.”
Hibiscus Coast Station / Albany /Constellation Park and Rides should remain free
AT wants to introduce paid parking for existing park and rides. We’ve led the charge in council to keep them free. Our ward has the largest park and rides in Auckland. All three are an outstanding success encouraging people to use the Northern Busway. Charging would discourage people catching buses. They stay free!
Action on the coast
Penlink construction • billion-dollar infrastructure investment • Gulf Harbour Ferry & Golf Course • protecting Orewa Beach Reserve • improving community facilities Penlink - 3 years into the billion-dollar transport project on the Coast.
The largest infrastructure project in the history of the HBC is flying ahead full steam with multiple workstations along the 7 km route. Construction has been going nearly 3 years now! When completed it will transform the roading network across the HBC, removing congestion on Whangaparaoa Road and Hibiscus Highway and improving travelling times.
$40m Flood Recovery repairs aroundthe ward
Since January 2023 floods nearly $40 million has been spent fixing roads and slips across the Albany Ward. In the ‘Urban North’ there have been 112 projects with 38 of these classified as ‘major’ - in Whangaparaoa, Stillwater, Hatfields Beach and Wade River.
Albany Ward gets own botanical regional park!
In an extraordinary act of generosity, Auckland philanthropist Rosemary Platt this year gifted 14 acres of ecologically significant garden right in the middle of the Albany Ward! In exchange for this gift, Auckland Council has committed to protect the botanical site as a Regional Park in perpetuity so future generations can access & enjoy its remarkable collection of trees and Saving Orewa Beach Reserve open space.
